The University of Toronto is a public research university which is sometimes referred to as U of T, Toronto or UToronto. Situated in Toronto, Ontario, the university is precisely on the grounds that surround Queen’s Park. Founded in 1827 by royal charter as King’s College, this is the first ever institution of higher learning in Upper Canada. As a collegiate university, it has 12 colleges which differ in character and history, with each college retaining substantial autonomy on institutional and financial affairs.
