Toronto Sighseeings: Toronto in a Day

Today you might be starting at the top! At the CN Tower. Even if the famous tower isn't the tallest in the world anymore, you must overlook Toronto's most celebrated icon (plus, the new glass elevator makes the ride up even more of a thrill).

Beginning your tour here will give you a perspective not so much on Toronto as on the city's position in this corner of North America. If it's a clear day, you'll be able to see all the way to Niagara Falls. But even if it isn't clear out, you can check out my favourite section, the amazing glass floor.

I haven't gotten up the nerve to jump up and down on it yet, but just standing on it and looking all the way down to the ground is scarier than any thrill-park ride I've ever experienced.

At the Harbourfront Centre you'll find the kind of place where you could easily spend a day, so you may need to tear yourself away to stay on track. It's lovely to watch the glassblowers, potters, jewelry makers, and other artisans at work in the Craft Studio; the Artists' Gardens, a series of diverse landscapes created by local talent, are another highlight.

Depending on how active you feel, this is also your chance to get out on the water: The Harbourfront Canoe and Kayak School will let you rent a boat and can offer instruction!

Take a Break now! The Eaton Centre has a food court on its lower level that offers some surprisingly good options, such as the Made in Japan Teriyaki outlet and the Richtree cafeteria-style restaurant (good salads). Another good choice is the City Grill restaurant, on the upper level. This affordable spot has many picks under CAD 15, including great salads (try the Niagara Picnic Salad with blue cheese, pecans, and grilled chicken), grilled fish, burgers, and pasta.

At the Eaton Centre you can spend loads of time seeing the shop: it's an amazing choice!
