This city was settled for the first time in the year 1749 in the form of one of the French agricultural settlements; thereby having made it the most ancient continually inhabited one in Canada. ‘Petite Cote’ was the name given to it at first. Later on, it came to be known as ‘La Cote de Misere’, meaning ‘Poverty Coast’; thanks to sandy soils adjoining LaSelle.
