Reviews Notre-Dame Basilique
Notre-Dame Basilique
The Notre-Dame Basilique is a church situated in the historic district of Old Montreal built between 1824 and 1829. This beautiful structure, in Gothic style, can hold around four thousand worshippers.
It has grand interiors with colourful and intricate carvings, a deep blue coloured ceiling with gold stars and the area near the altar colourfully decorated in hues of silver, gold, red, purple, azure and blue.
The stained glass windows display scenes of the religious history of the city of Montreal. At the rear of the Basilica is the Sacred Heart Chapel which was rebuilt in 1980 after it was destroyed in a fire. This is also known as the Wedding Chapel and has been the site of countless wedding ceremonies over several years.
There are a number of musical performances held here and many attend the annual performance of Handel’s Messiah which is held here each Christmas.
