Whitehorse, or the Wilderness City, is the capital of the Yukon province of Canada. It is located on the banks of the Yukon River. The city, having some of the best scenery in Canada, got its name from the White Horse Rapids, which is now the site of a hydroelectric dam.
The Whitehorse International Airport caters to the air needs of the locals and tourists. There are plans of reopening the city’s old railway line.
The city has a sub-arctic climate. It comes under the rain shadow of the Coast Mountains and has the distinction of being Canada’s driest city. The rainfall is hardly 160 mm, while snowfall is 145 cm.
Whitehorse has nearly 24,000 inhabitants (which is more than half of Yukon’s resident population). The city has hosted several Arctic Winter Games, including the ones for 2007.
