Akumal, popularly known as the ‘place of the turtles’, is home to a large number of fine, sandy beaches, with crystal clear waters. The town, with its wide expanse of beaches and natural area, offers its tourists a number of diving and snorkelling opportunities.
It is also home to a number of coral gardens; a popular destination for divers from all over the world. The coral reef that is a part of the Mesoamerican Reef stretches along the Yucatan Peninsula. Popularly known as the ‘Jewel of the Caribbean’, the coral reef houses a large number of coral and fish varieties.
Akumal, which lies on the shores of the Half Moon Bay and the Akumal Bay, is an ideal location for all sea and sand lovers. The popular Tulum ruin, situated to the south of Akumal, is another popular location.
The town has introduced a Turtle Watching Protection Program, where tourists can participate, and watch and swim with the turtles, during their nesting season (May to October).
