Baja California Sur, one of the longest peninsulas in the world shares its border with the Mexican state of Baja California to the north and is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California to the south. The peninsula is an arid region with mountain ranges and a deeply indented coastline.
Baja California Sur was home to the indigenous tribes of Cochimí, Kiliwa and Paipai before it was colonised by the Spanish.
