If you are interested in Mayan history, visit the archaeological zone of Palenque and the ruins of Yaxchilán with primitive Mayan structures such as pyramid temples and palaces. The Regional Museum of Chiapas displays historical and ethnographical material. In Tonalá is an archaeological site with ruins reflecting early Aztec influence. The Chamula settlements offer an insight into the life of Indians.
The Church of Santo Domingo, built in the Mexican-Baroque style, and the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción from the seventeenth-century in San Cristóbal de Las Casas are well worth a visit. In the town of Chiapa de Corzo is the Colonial Fountain, an octagonal fountain from the sixteenth century built in the Moorish style.
Make sure to visit the spectacular Sumidero Canyon. Boat trips through the gorge are organised from Chiapa de Corzo. To explore the diverse flora and fauna of this region, try hiking and camping in the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve with 392 bird species. A group of about 100 small lagoons, known collectively as the Lagunas de Montebello, are worth visiting. Situated at the foot of an extinct volcano, Tapachula is a picturesque small town. The beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul must not be missed. |
