Guanajuato has several museums, the most unique of which is the Guanajuato Mummy Museum, containing mummified bodies. There is also the Mineralogy Museum with an impressive mineralogy collection. The Waldemar Julsrud Museum in Acambaro has more than 20,000 ceramic statues discovered in the mountain range, Cerro del Toro. Guanajuato was the birthplace of Diego Rivera, a Mexican artist, whose house is now a museum. Miguel Hidalgo proclaimed Mexico’s Independence in the city of Dolores Hidalgo, which also has the House of Don Miguel Hidalgo with historical objects.
The churches worth visiting are the Basilica of Nuestro Señora de Guanajuato, a seventeenth-century Baroque construction and the San Miguel Arcangel Parish, a Neo-classical construction in San Miguel de Allende. The San Agustin Church in Salamanca with gold interiors and a Moorish influence and the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Celaya are masterpieces. There is also the church of La Valenciana built in the Churrigueresque style.
The Cuitzeo Lagoon and the Obrajuelo Spa with thermal springs are also worth a visit. The Aqueduct in Acambaro and the Triumphal Arch in Leon are well-frequented monuments. The Eraitzicutzio Festival includes parades through the streets of Irapuato and cultural events. September Independence Festivities are traditional Mexican patriotic celebrations in Dolores Hidalgo.
