Hidalgo, Mexico has an area of 20,813 sq km and about 2,345,500 inhabitants. Its capital is Pachuca.
Hidalgo is bounded by the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Querétaro, Tlaxcala, Puebla and Estado de Mexico. Most of this region lies in the Central Mexican Highlands, while a part of it is home to mountains and plateaus.
The population consists of a considerable proportion of Indians such as the Otomí, Nahua and Huastec people. Being a former Spanish colony, this region has multicultural influences. The state received its name as a tribute to Miguel Hidalgo (Father of Mexican Independence).
