Oaxaca, Mexico has an area of 93,952 sq km and a population of about 3,506,800. Its capital is Oaxaca City.
Oaxaca shares its boundaries with the Mexican states of Veracruz, Puebla, Chiapas and Guerrero and is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the south. Its topography is varied, comprising of the Sierra Madre mountain range, forests, deep valleys and savannah land.
Oaxaca was populated by several Indians civilisations such as the Zapotecs, Amuzgos and Mazatecs. It was also occupied by the Aztecs and the Spanish, giving this region a rich cultural mix.
