The towns of Cobá and Tulum are archaeological sites with many primitive Mayan structures such as temples and pyramids. In the town of Bacalar is the Fuerte de San Felipean, a Spanish fort built in the early eighteenth century, which now houses the Regional Museum with historical displays.
