Veracruz has a rich history evident in its many archaeological sites such as Zempoala which has vestiges of the Totonac culture. The town of Las Choapas is a site of Olmec remains and the town of Panuca displays Huastec ruins. Make sure to visit Tajin, one of the most important archaeological zones in Mexico.
Xalapa also has the largest collection of Diego Rivera’s (Mexican artist) paintings in Mexico at Pinacoteca Diego Rivera. The Museum of Anthropology houses almost thirty centuries of art and history, especially of pre-Columbian cultures. The Cathedral of Xalapa from the eighteenth century is worth visiting.
The adventurous could try rappelling and kayaking down the Antigua River. The Catemaco Lagoon is ideal for fishing and diving. Nature lovers can visit Jardin Lecuona, a botanic garden with more than 200 species of orchids alone, and the Aquarium in Veracruz City with a considerable variety of marine animals. The Texolo Waterfall, a 264-foot waterfall that drops into a canyon near the picturesque town of Xico, is worth visiting. You can attempt hiking and climbing on the Pico de Orizaba Mountain.
