Veracruz, Mexico has an area of 71,699 sq km and a population of about 7,110,200. Its capital is Xalapa.
Veracruz shares its boundaries with the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Puebla, Hidalgo and San Luis Potosí and is bounded by the Gulf of Mexico on the east. The topography of this region is dominated by its coastline and mountain ranges.
This region was home to the Olmecs, Huastecs and Totonacs before being occupied by the French and the Spanish. The population here is mainly Mestizo (mixed indigenous and foreign ancestry). |
