The Church of Our Lady of Purisima Concepcioninin in Campeche is a beautiful construction from the sixteenth century. Museo Regional chronicles the history of Campeche and has an archaeological collection as well. Another interesting town is Lerma, where the Fort of San Luis was built to ward off pirates. The Fort of San Miguel, one of the earliest fortifications in the state now houses the Campeche Regional Museum, with pre-Hispanic and colonial material. Campeche has several interesting archaeological sites. Near the town of Bolonchén are the Xtacumbil Xunaan Caves with beautiful formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Nearby are the ruined Temples of Kichmool and Itzimté. Becan is another archaeological site built from carved limestone, a very rare construction. Founded in 600–300 BC, the archaeological zone of Edzna is an example of one of the most advanced Mayan cities. The fishing village of Champotón is a popular seaside resort, where you can go swimming and fishing. Baluarte de San Pedro, one of the bastions in Campeche City now sells local handicrafts. Also visit the Mansión Carbajal with Arabic arches and marble work which is currently a crafts store.
