Campeche City, the Hidden Treasure of the Yucatan, is the capital of the state of Campeche in Mexico and lies on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
The region experiences a warm, humid climate, with wet summers and dry winters. Average temperatures range from 20°C–32°C, with frequent afternoon thundershowers.
Founded over 2000 years ago, the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its restored colonial architecture and ancient Mayan heritage with a mix of Spanish influence.
More than 250,000 residents inhabit the city of Campeche. Nearby tourist places include Ciudad Del Carmen, Champoton and Escarcega. The city of Merida (in the neighbouring state of Yucatan) has a good bus service to Campeche.
