Campeche’s relaxing and friendly ambience makes for a perfect break from the bustle of the busier Yucatan Peninsula. To protect the city from attacks, the city was walled and has eight Baluartes (bastions) which have managed to survive to this date and now host gardens and museums.
Of these, the Baluarte de la Soledad has the Museo de Estelas Maya, housing seventeenth-century seafaring equipment and antiques. The photogenic Puerta Del Lar (Sea Gate) at one time provided an excellent way to enter the city. Also of mention is the Land Gate with its museum and the great Light-n-Sound show.
Explore the city on the tourist-favourite Campeche Trolley, which takes you on a guided tour of attractions like the sixteenth-century Cathedral, which is one of the Yucatan Peninsula’s oldest churches, and the attractive Historic Centre. Don’t forget to visit the 5-km-long Malecon (boardwalk), a palm tree-lined avenue with Mayan monuments and gardens.
