Campeche, Mexico has an area of 50,812 sq km and about 754,700 inhabitants. Its capital is Campeche City. Campeche is bounded by the Mexican States of Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Tabasco, on the south by Guatemala and on the west by the Gulf of Mexico. The topography of the state is dominated by its coastline. Campeche was initially a part of the state of Yucatán and became a separate state only in 1857. Originally inhabited by the Native Americans such as the Mayan people, this region was later occupied by the Spanish.
