Chetumal is the capital of the state of Quintana Roo in Southern Mexico. Bordering the Caribbean Sea, it is located on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.
The climate of this region is tropical, warm and humid. The average annual temperature is 26°C. The best time to visit is between January and March, the coolest months.
Economic expansion of the city began in 1970 after construction of highways that linked Chetumal to the rest of Mexico. Its proximity to Belize and Honduras makes Chetumal an important port town and a centre of commerce.
Occupied by the Spanish, prior to which there were indigenous tribe settlements, this city has a multicultural atmosphere. The population of 220,000 is mainly engaged in the service sector.
