The main attraction in the city of Chetumal is the Museo de la Cultura Maya (Museum of Maya culture), showcasing the art, religion and daily life of the indigenous Mayan people. The Botanical Zoo in Chetumal is worth visiting. Another attraction is the Government Palace, with its many murals.
A stroll along the Costero Boulevard would reveal English-styled timber homes, in strong contrast to modern buildings.
Close to the Bay of Chetumal is the fishing village of Xcalac, which offers opportunities for diving. The Chinchorro Bank, part of a huge coral reef, lies a few kilometres offshore. The Bacalar Lagoon is well-frequented spot by tourists, for the many water-sports it offers. In the town of Bacalar, is the Fuerte de San Felipean, a Spanish fort built in the early eighteenth century; it now houses a history museum.
For an archaeological trip, visit the Mayan ruins of Kohunlich, amidst the tropical forests.
