Chiapas, Mexico has an area of 74,211 sq km and about 4,293,400 inhabitants. Its capital is Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
Chiapas is bounded by the Mexican states of Tabasco, Veracruz and Oaxaca, on the east by Guatemala and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. The topography of this region is extremely diverse with hilly ranges, valleys, volcanoes, rivers and lakes.
Prior to pre-Hispanic times, the region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Mayans and Olmecs.
