San Cristobal has some impressive monuments to offer its visitors. The sixteenth-century Catedral de San Cristobal de las Casas (with its excellent baroque-design and Solomonic altarpieces) and the fifteenth-century Templo y Ex Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzman (the most beautiful church of San Cristobal with a charming façade) are worth visiting.
Also visit the Na-Bolom Centre to learn more about the Mayan heritage. Culture buffs will love the Centro Cultural de Los Altos de Chiapas, which also houses some pre-Hispanic period exhibits, and the quaint Maya Medicine Museum, which offers ‘healers’ to cure all your ailments.
Marcos dolls with their cute ski-masks and rifles make for are ideal souvenirs and are available at the Jose Castillo Tielemans market; you could also get some Mexican pottery at Real de Guadalupe Street.
Also try the Chanfaina (lamb organs with rice) and the tasty Asado Chiapaneco (servings of roasted pork).
