Founded in 1577, Saltillo is the capital of the state of Coahuila in North-Eastern Mexico. Saltillo is known as ‘The Athens of Mexico’ for its vibrant cultural scene and its many educational centres and thinkers. It is also called the ‘Detroit of Mexico’ because of its automotive industry, with the Daimler-Chrysler and General Motors plants.
The climate is cool and dry all-year-round, with an average temperature of 16°C. Travel between November and March can be avoided, when the temperature is particularly low.
A former Spanish colony, Saltillo was home to many Indian tribes, lending the city a multicultural atmosphere.
With a population of 649,000, the locals are mainly engaged in the manufacturing sector. Saltillo’s most famous exports are Saltillo tiles and the ‘sarapes’ (traditional blankets).
