Durango, or Ciudad De Victoria as it was known before, is the capital city of the state of Durango in Mexico. Founded in 1563 in the Spanish colonial era, Durango is also the largest city in the state and has a population of more than 500,000 people.
On the outskirts of the city lie the foothills of the massive Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range, which offers excellent outdoor activities like rock-climbing, camping and biking. To the east is the diverse Chihuahuan Desert, the largest in North America.
The city has a dry, temperate climate with mild winters and wet summers. Durango counts almost 300 days of sunshine in a year.
Durango is a relaxing tourist destination that does not have the mass influx of summer tourists like other Mexican cities. Inland cities like Monterrey and Saltillo are also located close by.
