The city of Guanajuato is the capital of the state of Guanajuato in Central Mexico. The name ‘Guanajuato’ comes from the Tarascan (indigenous language) word ‘Quanaxjuato’ which means ‘Place of Frogs’.
The climate is cool and humid, with an annual average temperature of around 18°C. Travel during the monsoons can be avoided.
The city played a major role in the Mexican War of Independence, as it is here that Miguel Hidalgo started the Independence Movement.
During pre-Hispanic times, the region was originally inhabited by the nomadic tribes. The discovery of gold and silver around Guanajuato by its Spanish colonizers led to the economic development of this region. Now the population of 71,000 is engaged in commerce and industry.
