Guanajuato has several museums, the most unique of which is the Guanajuato Mummy Museum, containing mummified bodies. There is also the Mineralogy Museum, with an impressive mineralogy collection. The Museo de la Independencia Mexicana contains historical and ethnological material. Guanajuato was the birthplace of Diego Rivera, Mexican artist, whose house is now a museum.
Casa Rul y Valenciana, a Neo-Classical mansion of the eighteenth century is a must-see. The churches worth visiting in Guanajuato are the Basilica of Nuestro Señora de Guanajuato, a seventeenth-century Baroque construction, and the La Compañía, a Jesuit church with a Churrigueresque façade.
Those interested in arts could visit the Juárez Theatre for its cultural performances. The Union Garden also has live music and dance programmes.
At the Hidalgo Market, one can purchase local handicrafts. Being a university town, the nightlife here is vibrant.
