The Garrafon Natural Reef Eco Park is excellent for snorkelling in clear waters. To the south-east of Isla Mujeres, you can find the Shrine of Ixchel, a small archaeological site built by the Mayans that receives the first sunlight of Mexico in certain seasons and is a popular visit on New Year’s Eve.
Walk through the calles (streets), especially Hidalgo Avenue with its tourist shops and quaint restaurants; beach clothing, jewellery and local Mexican handicrafts make for excellent souvenirs. Take time out to see Casa Mundaca, the famed Mexican pirate Mundaca’s home; it now has tours with an insight into his life and a small in-house zoo.
You can avail of a day trip to the small, uninhabited island of Isla Contoy, which lies to the north of Isla Mujeres and has over 70 species of birds like Brown Pelicans, Roseate Spoonbills and Flamingos. Beware of the boa constrictors in the ponds.
