México has a rich history reflected in the many ruins in the state. Teotihuacán, an archaeological site, displays Toltec remains such as pyramid temples, palaces and a citadel. Malinalco is famous for its archaeological ruins exhibiting primitive Aztec structures. Texcoco, an old fourteenth-century town, is famous for its indigenous arts and crafts all over Mexico. The magnificent Plateresque-style church of San Agustín in Acolman dates back to the fifteenth century. Tepotzotlán, once a centre for spiritual instruction, houses a Churrigueresque-style Church featuring colonial art. The eighteenth-century Baroque church of El Carmen in Toluca houses the Museum of Fine Arts. The Museum of Anthropology and History displays historical, ethnological and archaeological information on the state.
The Iztaccihuatl-Popocatepetl National Park located at the foot of both these volcanic mountains offers a fantastic view. Excursions to both these peaks are organised from nearby towns. The Isla de las Aves (Island of Birds) is a refuge for eco-tourists for its many bird species. The rock formations of La Peña, the Salto de Ferrería Waterfalls and the thermal springs of Ixtapan de la Sal must not be missed.
