Caricature Museum in Mexico City

One of the great little pieces of fun to be had in Mexico City can be found at the well-renowned Caricature Museum. The Museo de la Caricatura in Spanish is located in an 18th century building built in the Baroque style situated right in the historic center of the city.  It was opened in 1987 to preserve and promote the history of Mexican cartooning which is done for both political and entertainment purposes: to “preserve, reprint and disseminate artistic works realized by Mexican cartoonists over history.”.

The historic building it occupies was originally the home of Cristo College, a royal college established in 1612 and is very  beautiful in itself.  The permanent collection is in one hall on the ground floor, and begins with mostly political cartoons from the Porfirio Diaz presidency.  They have also recently held themed exhibitions such as “Piracy in the Modern World” and “Cartoons of the 19th Century.  On top of this the museum runs a series of workshops and seminars which you should check out if they coincide with your trip.
