Mexico city’s Museo del Estanquillo is firstly a beautiful building in its own right. Secondly it houses a fantastic pop-cultural collection, over 12,000 artefacts, covering photography, miniature architectural models, drawings, caricatures and engravings. The collections were amassed over a thirty year period by the essayist Carlos Monsivais. It addresses mexican national and cultural history and is a great place to get a rounded view of this interesting country and its dynamic history.
The museum is located inside the La Esmeralda. Throughout the twentieth century, the building had several twists, jewelry to government office, then to the bank, until the club hosted Opulence and now also houses a record store. This is the historic centre of Mexico city, Isabel la Católica number 26. Admission is free and it is open 10am-6pm Wed-Mon.
