The Mercato central is of the largest markets in Mexico never mind in Mexico city alone. As the name suggests it is located roughly centrally to the old city and is the place for locals to go for basic kitchen wares, foodstuffs and all of the things which make our everyday worlds go around, not particularly the antique and crafts that many tourists are looking for. Nevertheless there is some of that sort of stuff on offer and it is well worth a visit to spend a while amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday Mexican city life.
The food markets are particularly good here with fresh (that is city-fresh) produce and meats available. As always though the pallor of the gringo is a distinct disadvantage and it can actually be difficult to come away from a purchase with the pleasant feeling of having gotten a good deal. It is a good guide mark to aim for half or a little less than of the initial asking price and be prepared to walk away.
