The penalty for violations imposed on foreigners can be pretty harsh and it is best to avoid getting into trouble with the law.
Excessive consumption of alcohol and creating problems with offensive behaviour, careless driving or disturbing the peace can amount to a criminal offence and imprisonment could follow.

On beaches please heed the warning flags to avoid incidences of drowning. Travel only in licensed taxis called sitio taxis, as visitors can be robbed or kidnapped by criminals who disguise themselves as taxi drivers.

Never carry weapons or ammunition with you while travelling as harsh penalties are impose on visitors for this offence. Always carry your driver’s license with you when driving.
