The Morelia Cathedral, a Baroque construction, and the Cathedral of Basilica Nuestra Señora de la Salud from the sixteenth century in the town of Patzcuaro are important churches in the state. The Michoacan Regional Museum houses a historical collection of the region. The La Huatapera Museum in Uruapan displays handicrafts of the indigenous people. A unique museum is the Museo Nacional del Cobre in Santa Clara del Cobre displaying a variety of copper objects.

The adventurous can attempt an ascent of the extinct Paricutín Volcano. Angangueo is ideal for eco-tourists between October and March frequented when millions of the ‘Monarca’ butterflies arrive. The town of San Jose Purua is famous for its springs while Playa Azul is characterised for its beautiful beaches.

Pátzcuaro Lake, surrounded by forested mountains, extinct volcanoes and a string of islands is a frequent tourist spot. Close to the lake are Indian villages, where you can gain an insight into their way of life. The town of Tzintzuntzan is well known for its indigenous arts and crafts. The archaeological ruins close to Tzintzuntzan display Tarascan remains from the twelfth century.
