The archaeological zone of Yagul displays ruins of the Mixtecs such as fortresses and palaces and the Monte Alban archaeological zone offers an insight into the Zapoteca and Olmec Cultures. The Regional Museum houses archaeological and ethnological collections of Indians. The town of Guelatao is an important historic site as Benito Juarez (Mexican President) was born here. The Cathedral of Oaxaca from the eighteenth century, the Santo Domingo Church and the San Agustin Church are important ecclesiastical buildings. The Municipal Museum, housed in the sixteenth-century Cortés House, displays contemporary works of art. Puerto Escondido, surrounded by hills, is characterised for its fine beaches such as Puerto Angelito and Carrizalillo. The Lagunas de Chacahua National Park is famous for its lagoons and several islands with numerous birds. Oaxaca City has thriving markets, with Mercado Benito Juárez offering earthenware and Mercado de Artensanias selling textile goods. Several towns in Oaxaca produce indigenous artwork. Tehuantepec is renowned all over Mexico for its hand-embroidered work, while Juchitan is known for its woodwork and pottery.
