Most of Puebla’s historic monuments can be found within walking distance of the El Zocalo central square. The downtown area contains elegant Spanish and colonial-styled architecture dating back centuries like the neoclassical Puebla Cathedral and the impressive Palacio Municipal. The gold-laden Rosario Chapel within the Iglesia de Santo Domingo is a treat to the eyes.
The Museo Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Mexicanos has an exciting collection of steam engines, passenger cars and diesel engines, while the Automobile Museum houses the Popemobile that was used by Pope John Paul when in Mexico.
To get around, you can hop aboard a bright red double-decker bus called Turibus, which offers a guided tour of the city’s attractions and historic architecture.
Volcanic wonders to be found in Puebla include the Popocatépetl volcano which spouts ash periodically and the extinct Cuaxcomate, which is the world’s smallest volcano.
