A famous attraction is the Zicatela Beach which is considered as the world’s best surfing break because of its daring waves. A hot favourite among the surfers is the Mexican Pipeline wave. Watch out for international surfing tournaments that are held between April and September.
The family-friendly Playa Principal beach is popular both among locals and visitors. Watch turtles crawl up the Barra de Colotepec beach, or just relax and watch the Mexican sunset at Marinero beach.
If you’ve had your fill of beaches, get some local sightseeing done at the El Adoquin Street (with its souvenir shops and quaint seafood) and the Lagunas de Chacagua National Park (a few kilometres outside the city). Also visit the hot springs near the village of San Jose Manialtepec, which is around 25 km west.
Festivals include Navy Day on 1 June, with its fishing tournament, and the Virgin De Soledad festival on 18 December, with its fireworks, dancing and bullfights.
