Santiago de Querétaro, or simply Querétaro, is the capital of and the largest city in the state of Querétaro in Central Mexico.
A city with over 460 years of Mexican history, it was the last capital of Emperor Maximilian during the French intervention in Mexico. It was in Querétaro that leaders of Mexico’s Independence Movement met in secret to discuss the ousting of their Spanish rulers. Querétaro was also the birthplace of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), the political party that governed Mexico for 71 years.
The climate is warm and dry all year round. The average annual temperature is around 19°C, with seldom rains, usually between June and September.
Once an old silver-mining city, Querétaro is now an industrial hub. The population of 596,000 earns one of the highest per capita incomes in Mexico.
