The Dzilam and the Rio Lagartos are state nature reserves in the vicinity of Cancun, eastern Mexico. The Dzilam State Reserve, designated in 1989, was the first area to be included in the system of national protected areas for the state of Yucatan. Dzilam reserve is a zone of transition between the coastal shoreline and the sea. The reserve is comprised of varied landscapes including beaches, mangroves, coastal salt marshes, and dunes that provide habitat for a diversity of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
The greatest threats to this region are the growing pressure from fishing practices and the encroachment of agricultural and ranch land.
Visitors can take short guided tours of the sight and access can be attained with permission. As always your hotel staff are the best people to help you through these things as they’ll know someone, who knows someone.....
