The most famous landmark in Querétaro is the 74-arched aqueduct used to supply water to the city. In the Historic Centre of Querétaro is the Convent of the Holy Cross, where the conquest of the city was consummated by Emperor Maxmilian.
Museums like the Art Museum, (located in the Convent of San Agustin) with its collection of sixteenth-century artwork and the Regional Museum (located in the Convent of San Francisco) with historical items from the colonial period are worth visiting. The picturesque churches of Santa Clara and Santa Rosa de Viterbo must not be missed either.
The Republican Theatre, a cultural centre, is of historical importance too, as Mexico’s constitution was drafted here and its national anthem was first played here.
At the edge of the city is Cerro de las Campanas (or Hill of Bells), where Emperor Maximilian was executed. Now a recreational park, this area contains the City Museum and the Chapel of Maxmilian.
