Sinaloa, Mexico has an area of 58,238 sq km and a population of about 2,608,400. Its capital is Culiacán.
Sinaloa borders the Mexican states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango and Nayarit and is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west. The topography of this region is mainly dominated by its coastline and the Sierra Madre mountain range.
Sinaloa was initially occupied by Indian tribes such as the Cahitas, Tahues and Xiximes, before it became a Spanish colony. Presently, most of the population is comprised of Creoles.
