The main attractions in Tamaulipas include the monuments and structures built in the nineteenth century to commemorate various political figures. These include a bronze bust of Benito Juárez (five-time Mexican President), monuments of Porfirio Diaz Mori (another Mexican President) and of heroes of the Mexican War of Independence. The Cathedral of Ciudad Victoria and the Temple of the Immaculate Conception in Tampico with a Neo-classical façade are important ecclesiastical buildings. Visit the town of Ebano, which has a Huastec archaeological site. The Casamata Museum in Matamoros displays historical exhibits.
The adventurous can head to Chairel Lagoon, which offers opportunities for water-skiing, sailing and canoeing. The El Cielo Biosphere Ecological Reserve is a haven for eco-tourists, with its wide variety of flora and fauna. The pristine beaches of Altamira and Miramar are visited frequently for their warm waters. A tour along the Panuco River in Tampico offers a wonderful sight of the city. There are also boating opportunities on this river.
Visit the Maclovia Herrera Market in Nuevo Laredo to purchase indigenous handicrafts. The Matamoros Fair is a vibrant event with parades, exhibitions and regional music and dance events.
