Tlaxcala: Vacations and Tourism

Tlaxcala is the capital city of the Mexican state of Tlaxcala. Founded in 1520, the city is quite small, being the smallest ever state capital in Mexico. The city is surrounded by three towering volcanoes: Popocatépetl, Ixtaccihuatl and La Malinche. The last volcano is dormant and is open for day hikes.

Tlaxcala is 120 km from the capital, Mexico City. The closest airport is at the south-western Puebla city, around 85 km away.

The annual temperature is around 15°C, and it usually does not vary much during the year. There are short spells of rain in the summer months (June–September). Winters can be sunny and dry, albeit cool.

The population of Tlaxcala is more than 15,000. Tlaxcala state is the smallest of Mexico’s states and exports mainly textiles, chemicals and some pharmaceuticals.
