The main square in Toluca, Plaza de los Mártires (or Zócalo) is dominated by a Cathedral, a nineteenth-century Neo-Classical structure. The Government Palace and the Palacio de Justicia are important monuments. Close to Zocalo is the Cosmovitral, an Art Nouveau building, which houses the Botanical Garden, with many plant species.
The Church of Santa Veracruz, from the colonial era is well worth your time. The eighteenth-century Baroque church of El Carmen houses the Museum of Fine Arts.
On the outskirts of Toluca is the Centro Cultural Mexiquense, which hosts many art exhibitions. Inside the centre, is the Museo de Antropología e Historia del Estado de México, with ethnological exhibits.
It is worth making a trip to the extinct volcano, Nevado de Toluca (or Xinantécatl), which has many activities like mountain biking and hiking. Nearby are Laguna del Sol and Laguna de la Luna, shallow lakes with a lovely view of the Toluca valley.
