Coatzacoalcos is a major port city situated to the southern part of the Veracruz, on the Coatzacoalcos River. The word 'Coatzacoalcos' comes from an indigenous word, which means, “Site of the Snake” or “the place where the snakes hide”. This city is the birthplace of the popular Hollywood actress Salma Hayek and is home to popular sports team like the Red Sharks (Tiburones Rojos de Coatzacoalcos) and the Dolphins (Delfines de Coatzacoalcos).
This important commercial and industrial center is the third most significant port in the Gulf of Mexico.
