Xalapa (or Jalapa) is the capital of the state of Veracruz in Eastern Mexico. The name ‘Xalapa’ comes from the Nahuatl (indigenous language) roots ‘Xalli’, which means ‘sand’ and ‘Apan’ meaning ‘water place’. The official name of the city is Xalapa de Enríquez, named in honour of the Governor, Juan de la Luz Enriquez. However, it has been abbreviated to Xalapa for everyday use.
Xalapa is known as the ‘The Athens of Veracruz’ for its large creative community and vibrant art scene. It is also referred to as the ‘City of Flowers’ for its many parks and gardens.
The climate is temperate, cool and humid, with an average annual temperature of 19°C. The best time to visit is between November and April, when the rainfall is low.
The population of 400,000 is mainly engaged in industry and the service sector.
