Yucatan has a rich history evident in its many archaeological sites such as the Chichén Itzá archaeological zone, which displays ancient Mayan ruins over 10 centuries old such as temples and pyramids. Balankanche Cave, a ceremonial site for the Mayans located in a stalactitic limestone cave must be visited. Those further interested in Mayan history could explore other archaeological sites such as Sayil and Uxma with over 20 structures. The Kabah archaeological site has monuments in the traditional Puuc style of architecture. Evidence of inhabitation since at least 600 BC has been found at the Dzibilchaltun archaeological site. To learn more of the resplendent culture of this region, visit the Museum of Anthropology and History in Mérida. The Franciscan Monastery with 75 arches in the town of Izamal is a majestic structure, built atop a Mayan pyramid. Casa Montejo, one of the finest examples of Spanish colonial architecture in Mérida, is worth visiting. For a unique experience, visit the town of Valladolid and try swimming in Cenote Zaci, a semi-opened well, 80-m deep. Explore the Loltun Caverns with stalactites, stalagmites, petroglyphs and rupestrian paintings. Nature lovers can visit the El Palmar Ecological Reserve.
