The Iglesia de la Mejorada

Iglesia de la Mejorada is a large 17th century church situated in Merida, Yucatan.  Its construction got completed in 1640, with Franciscan architectural style. Having a lintelled access, the doorframe has diamond shaped figures. The interior of this building is made of a single nave, with many side chapels. The dome has a small altarpiece decorated with vegetable motifs, and in the middle, one can see the image of the Virgen del Carmen.  As time passed, this building was a hospital, then a prison for women and later on, soldier’s barracks place.  At the end of the 1960, the Yucatan government donated this site to the State University’s School of architecture. Opened in 1983, this school is visitors admiring sight and also student’s working place.
