Originally named as Corey, Fairfield is located in the Jefferson County, two miles north of Birmingham, Alabama and is spread over 3.5 square miles of land. It has a population of 11547 as per the 2006 US Census estimates. The city was planned as a place to accommodate the workers of the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company.
It is also home to the Miles College, a historic black college founded in 1905. Though the steel making industry took a downturn in the 20th century, it is still the major employer in Fairfield. There is however still a couple of ancillary units related to steel manufacturing operating in the premises and a number of small service related business operating in the area.
