Selma is situated on the banks of the Alabama River in Dallas County, Alabama. It covers a total area of 37.4 sq km. With a population of about 20,000, Selma is the largest town in the western Black Belt region.
Temperatures range from 24°C to 12°C. Selma is lush with greenery because of the Spanish moss which grows here in abundance.
Selma is known for its historic Selma to Montgomery marches—three civil rights marches that began in the city. Sites like the Sturdviant Hall Museum and the National Voting Rights Museum reflect the rich history of this city. The Old Live Oak Cemetery also holds historical importance as it has many civil rights soldiers buried here.
Selma boasts of the largest historic district with over 1,250 structures. Selma displays magnificent architecture which is evident in the antebellum and Victorian mansions. The ghostly town of Cahawba, Selma’s first permanent capital, is also a popular tourist attraction.
