Merrill Field Airport is the first airport that was built in Anchorage in 1930 and is situated to the east of the downtown region.

The airport covers a total area of 436 acres and is a commercial service airport which meets the needs of the general aviation community.

The airport is named in honor of Russel Hyde Merrill, an Alaskan aviation pioneer who mysteriously disappeared in 1929 on a flight to Bethel. In 2006 the airport handled 187,798 flights and is said to be the 86th busiest airport in the nation.

The airport is said to be home to a thousand general aviation aircrafts and is the center for business operations in the state of Alaska.

There are 15 pedestrian gates installed at various places around the airport and pedestrians have to enter a cipher on the automatic code lock to gain entry into the airport.
